TABLE TENNIS RULES

The table tennis league at Centrum Sportów Spokojna in Tarnów

Groups
All league players are divided into groups. The principle is that higher groups contain more advanced players.

Number of groups.
The number of groups is based on the total number of players registered before the season starts. Groups should be as equal as possible, with six to nine players each. During the season, the number of groups may change only in justified cases involving substantial changes in player numbers.

Group size (number of players).
At the start of the season, the size of each group is set with the aim of keeping groups as equal as possible. The league organiser makes the final decision on group sizes.
Group sizes may change during the season if the total number of players changes.

Player order at the start of a round.
The order is established as follows:
Use the order from the most recently completed round.
Remove players who have withdrawn.
Add new players, including those returning to the league after a break, at the end in alphabetical order.

Allocation to groups.
Before each round, players are allocated to groups according to the order established for the start of that round.
Allocation begins with the highest group and continues down to the lowest.

During the season, group membership changes through promotion and relegation after each regular round.

League round.
In each round, every player must play one match against every other player in their group.

Round length.
Players are expected to play one match per week. A round is therefore planned to last one week less than the number of players in the largest group. It may be extended where circumstances justify this, for example during holiday periods, or at the request of at least one third of all league players.

If a player expects to be unable to play at least half their matches in a round, they should notify the organisers, for example due to health issues or travel. If they do not report this, or the reason is not considered sufficient, and they fail to play at least half their matches, the organiser may refuse their participation in future rounds.

Playing a match

Every match consists of five games. Each game is played to 11 points; after 10-10, a two-point lead is required to win.
Players umpire their own matches.
Only matches played at Centrum Sportów Spokojna count towards the league standings. If there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a recorded result does not come from a match played at the venue, it may be removed and the players will be notified. Players entering results themselves should tell reception that they have played a league match and identify both players. This helps avoid unnecessary uncertainty.

Scoring
Players receive one point for playing a match and one point for each game won in it.
If a match is not played because of the opponent, the player is awarded a walkover and five points; the opponent receives zero.
A player who completes every match in a round receives five bonus points. Wins by walkover count as completed matches for this purpose.

If a player withdraws during a round and has played at least half their matches, those results stand and the remaining matches are lost by walkover. Otherwise, their completed results are cancelled and all their matches are lost by walkover.

End of round - final order.
A player's position in their group for a round is based solely on points earned in that round.
If two or more players have the same points total, their head-to-head result decides their order.
After points are totalled and players ranked within each group, promotion and relegation are applied:

Promotion and relegation
After each round, the top two players in each group move to the bottom places in the group above, except in the highest group. The bottom two move to the top places in the group below, except in the lowest group.

End of the preliminary round.
After the preliminary round, player order is established as follows:
Players who finished first in their groups take the leading positions, followed by those who finished second, then third, and so on.
